Reverse the Signs of Heredity, Nursing and Aging

Aging, heredity, weight fluctuation, massive weight loss, motherhood and breastfeeding have a profound effect on the shape of a woman’s breasts. Breasts typically droop or sag over time, losing their firm and youthful look. Although these changes can’t be addressed with diet or exercise, there is still something you can do. Join the many women who have rejuvenated their bodies with a breast lift or breast reduction from New Jersey board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. David Evdokimow.

Before the breast lift surgery

During your consultation, Dr. Evdokimow will evaluate, the supporting mechanism of your breasts and the quality of the skin (sagging and drooping of the breast is an individual quality). He will determine the position of the nipple-areola complex and its relationship to the breast mound. He will take photographs. Mammograms are usually required. Breast lift candidates who are considering immediate pregnancy are discouraged from undergoing the procedure, since pregnancy and breastfeeding are known to stretch the supporting mechanism and the skin of the breast. Women who want to breastfeed in the future should discuss that with Dr. Evdokimow, since this type of procedure may affect the ability to breastfeed.

Dr. Evdokimow will develop an individual treatment plan depending on your goals and his recommendations. He will explain the precautions you can take to ensure the safety and success of your procedure. He will strongly discourage smoking, nicotine patches and nicotine gum for at least three weeks prior to the surgery.

  • Blood thinners such as aspirin, Coumadin and herbal supplements should be discontinued three weeks prior to the procedure. In patients with past wound-healing problems, additional measures might be required.

What to expect

In New Jersey, breast lift surgery is performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. The choice of skin incision and the position of the resulting scar depend on the amount of the desired nipple areola repositioning. You may choose from several different incision types:

  • 80 degrees around the top portion of the areola (half circle around and above the areola – crescent)
  • Around the areola
  • Around the areola and vertically down to the breast crease (IMF)
  • Around the areola, vertically down to the breast crease and along the breast crease

When breast fullness and rejuvenation are desired, patients often consider combining breast augmentation with their breast lift.

You will be discharged home when you have recovered from anesthesia. Mild discomfort can be controlled with oral pain medication. You will be required to wear a support bra to ensure your comfort and protect your new breast shape as you heal. Normal physical activities can be resumed within seven to ten days. Avoid sleeping face-down or applying continuous pressure to the breasts for two weeks. Also avoid strenuous physical activities for several weeks, despite the absence of discomfort.

Scars are permanent but will quickly fade. We use topical scar therapy to help this process. After the procedure, we recommend using a supportive bra. (Unfortunately, even lifted breasts are not immune to the effects of gravity and aging.) When the recovery period is complete and you’ve returned to your usual routine, you’ll see firmer, perkier and more youthful breasts.

Breast reduction

Breast reduction procedures have improved, as well. The trend is to eliminate the horizontal part of the incision because most complications, such as hypertrophic scarring and slow wound healing, are associated with that part. When we perform vertical scar breast reduction, breasts take approximately six months to reach their final shape.

Free nipple breast reduction

In women with very large and pendulous breasts, surgeons typically detach the nipple completely and use it later as a skin graft. Although complete loss of nipple sensation is often associated with that procedure, there is also an important benefit: improved blood supply to the remaining breast tissue. We typically find ways to avoid nipple detachment during breast reduction procedures.
